Step 5:

Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 25 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the flavors meld and vegetables are tender.
Step 7:
Remove and discard the bay leaf. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Step 8:
